Origami Owl is much more than just a catchy name; it is the fastest growing direct sales company in the history. The company started some four years ago with about $700 and a simple idea, and this year it is estimated to get revenue of more than $250 million. Amazed? Well, everyone is. No one, not even the people who started the company, ever imagined that their idea will one day make them millionaires.
How it all Began? This all started when a 14 year old girl, Isabella Weems, expressed her wish to her parents. The wish was to get a car on her 16th birthday. Her parents rather than promising to fulfill her wish told her that it would be better is she bought the car from her own money. So she started babysitting for neighbors, but it got her nowhere. She was able to earn just $350 after working for a few weeks. She soon realized that it will not be enough and began searching for a good business idea with her family. After a little brainstorming she landed on the idea of Origami Owl jewelry. Her parents put another $350 to her current savings and she started selling custom made jewelry after school. The word spread soon and the concept of living lockets became popular among girls and women in the region. The demand grew more than she could handle, so come the idea of direct sales. What is Direct Selling? Marketing and selling products away from the fixed retail location, directly to the customers, is direct selling. Selling through party plans and one to one demonstrations are some of the methods of direct selling. Internet sales are also one of them. What Origami Owl does is let people register with them and become a designer, as they call it. The designers get the products at discounted prices and then they can sell it at the marked prices, enjoying the profits. To become a designer you can start as low as $149 and gradually grow to any level depending on your hard work. The company also promotes a selling method called jewelry bar. In this a designer markets and sells Origami Owl jewelry at a party. Host of the party gets some special discounts and offers by the designer. Designers can also host a party themselves to organize a jewelry bar. There have been many companies, before this one, relying on direct sales for their business. But Origami Owl has done it differently. Their sales model is more “designer oriented”, so to speak, and not just to promote their own sales. That is, it is created in a way any ambitious youngster can realize her dream by starting a small business and earning money, just like Isabella Weems did. She just wanted a pre-owned car for her 16th birthday. And she got a brand new car and a multimillionaire dollar company, which she will be running as soon she is old enough.
